Carbon Credit Ownership and Methodology in Construction

We seek to establish a framework for carbon credit attribution within the construction industry, focusing on mineralization and biochar applications. Collaborating with important implem-entation partners along the supply chain, the initiative aims to clarify carbon credit ownership. This effort will enhance compliance with standards such as SIA 390/1 and EN 15804, paving the way for significant carbon reduction in construction.

Capture and Conversion of CO2

Capturing and converting CO2 through a single mechanism is a challenging task with significant potential for both economic and scalable CDR solutions. Our goal is to leverage 3D printing to create advanced capture filters made from materials specifically designed not only to effectively capture CO2 but also to catalyze its conversion, enabling more efficient and potentially sustainable transformations.

Alpine Biochar

We aim to implement a pyrolysis plant in the alpine valleys of canton Uri and Wallis. Local biomass will produce heat, power and biochar. From availability of biomass to the choice of location, contracts with suppliers and the marketing of the products: We accept the challenge to produce high quality biochar as a carbon sink to contribute to the Swiss net-zero goals.

The Sustainable Innovation Challenge

The aim of EPFL’s Sustainable Innovation Challenge association is to organize a new competition for university student teams working on sustainable technologies. The first edition will be a multi-category event taking place on the 13th & 14th of March 2025, which aims to explore a range of technologies from low-tech approaches to advanced CDR. The long term objective is to become a world reference when it comes to the promotion and gathering of pioneering student initiatives working in these fields.

Sunlight-Driven CO2 Capture

Direct Air Capture (DAC), offers measurable, immediate results with minimal land use requirements.  Although DAC has gained recent momentum, one of the main challenges for scaling DAC is its extremely high cost, which is significantly impacted by the high amount of energy, required for the CO2-release step. In search of minimizing and diversifying the renewable energy demand for CO2-release, we are developing a new DAC technology where sunlight serves as the trigger for the release of CO2.
